Episode 67

TODAY’S READING:

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.  Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual passion, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Romans 12:9-13

Sincerity – the quality of being free from hypocrisy.

I love that this verse says our love has to be sincere. In today’s self-serving society, sincerity is pretty scarce these days. Think about it, and everything is up to debate; everything has aside, everyone has an opinion.

It’s so easy to get overworked. So easy to give into a debate which can sometimes result in broken friendships. “Should we open schools?” “I don’t want to wear a mask; it’s my right” “I am going to wear a mask; there is no harm in me doing so” “Should we open restaurants?” “Of course, we should open restaurants” “not yet; the world isn’t ready.”

Don’t get me wrong, and opinions are healthy. God gave us free will so that we can exercise our rights to form our own opinions, but mainly so that we can willingly love and serve Him. He doesn’t need to force us to love Him.

But, our love needs to be sincere. Meaning when someone states an opinion that pulls on your strings, remember to do as this verse says. Cling onto what’s good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love—honor one another above yourself.

Meaning put up your cross and learn when it’s okay to respectfully back out of a debate. Even when you think that you are right, learn to apologize first. Learn to end the conversation where it has to end, even if it means you don’t get to say the last word.

We have one goal here on earth. To love and serve our creator. We do that by loving others sincerely. We do that by practicing this verse: Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

So instead of debating with our family and friends, and co-workers, serve them. Pray with and for them. Listen to their stories. See where you can meet them in their pain and learn to love them, as God loves them.

PRAYER

Jesus, we ask that you guide us in difficult conversations and debates. As our world starts to slowly return to what seems familiar, debates are still at an all-time high. Remind us what it means to love sincerely, even when we have different opinions. This year has caused a lot of unity and division at the same time. We pray our unity is stronger than any enemy trying to divide us. So we choose to love one another regardless of their opinions, religious views, and political parties. Today we choose to be more like you. We choose to love those people around us. We surrender our self-serving ways, and we look to you and the Holy Spirit to show us what it means to truly love our neighbors. In your Holy Name, we pray, Amen!

Hi, I'm Ali.
I want to encourage you on your faith journey!

I'm the coffee obsessed baker from Miami, FL who got too busy to find time to read scripture everyday. I knew my life was better with Jesus and I knew I wasn't the only one struggling with finding alone time with God every morning, so I put my dreams of opening a bakery aside and set out to produce a five minute daily devotional. What first started as an email chain, has now flourished into a beautiful community and I am so happy you are here!

MY TESTIMONY

We are a faith based community in pursuit of daily prayer. All it takes is five minutes - we know you're busy but He loves you still.
