Episode 249

TODAY’S READING:

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Genesis 4:7

We are now reading on Cain and Abel. Verse 7 really stood out to me. The chapter starts by introducing Cain and Abel. They were the sons of Adam and Eve. God favored Abel, and Cain was angry. God asked him, why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? And then He followed with the verse from today,

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

Tomorrow we will finish the story, but today I wanted to pause and reflect on that thought.

We must rule over the desire to sin.

He is giving Caine to outcomes, you either do what is right, or you don’t. When you don’t do what is right, the outcome is sin. God is clear; you must rule over it.

We have the ability to stay strong in our faith. We have the ability to turn away from our sinful nature. We can learn to surrender our anger, jealously, and other ugly emotions. We must not hold them in; it will only continue to grow until it becomes all-consuming.

May we hold onto God’s words? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? The solution to ruling over our sin is very simple, lean on what is right.

PRAYER

Jesus, every day we ask for strength because every day we face new battles and new encounters that make us want to give in to our anger, or our fear, or our jealously. We all have that one thing that we naturally lean towards rather than fighting for what is right. Today we pray to do what is right. One day at a time, we are going to lean on what is right. It is in your holy name that we ask for you to bless the day ahead of us. Amen!
