Episode 383

Rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Colossians 2:7

Day number three in our gratitude series. First and foremost, I love this time of year. I love to reflect on all that I have in my life. It’s so easy to forget or just to feel as if they were everyday things for everyone. The truth is that you are luckier than some in different aspects of your life.

You might be walking through a valley, and all you can see is someone on the top of their victory, but you don’t know that they may be in the trenches in other areas of their lives.

Funny how we can be both celebrating and also struggling.

Today I wanted to reflect on our families, friends, and the circles we are influenced by. These are all people we should be grateful for.

We are a combination of everyone that’s come before us. We are a perfect blend of many ancestors that taught our mothers and our fathers their values. They then passed it on to us.

No matter how good or bad, the lessons we carry are things we should be grateful for.

A lot of you have reached out asking about my dad. About a month and a half ago, I mentioned that my father had battled drug addiction for ten years and recently relapsed again.

Although he isn’t better, and although most times my heart breaks when I think of him. I can still thank God for his life. Because he has breath, and if he has breath, it means God isn’t done with him yet.

Maybe God is still working on him, and although I don’t know what He speaks into his heart, I do know that simultaneously God shows me compassion, patience, and boundaries through my relationship with him. I also have great memories to hold onto.

No one has a perfect story, but we all have people that have impacted us. Today I think of my mom, my sisters, my grandparents. Friends I love, and friends I once had. Today I am grateful for a church community and a family that isn’t blood.

May we remember that these relations, whether healthy or strained, have all pathed a way for us to become rooted in the truth of God. Every relationship serves a vital role in our life, and I am grateful for them. I am grateful for the lessons and grateful for the community that builds me up and keeps me accountable.

Hold onto yours a little tighter today.

Father God, today we take a moment to honor our parents. We are grateful for them and their lives if we knew them or we didn’t. Even if they are good people or hurtful ones, their DNA runs through our blood, and with it comes lessons that have shaped who we are today. Lord, we are grateful for the ones we keep in our lives. We have important people we love and admire, and we are so thankful for them. We are grateful for people who keep us rooted in the word of God. We honor them all today. It is in your holy name that we ask for you to bless them, those we are thinking about. We honor them today, and in your son’s name, we pray, AMEN!

Hi, I'm Ali.
I want to encourage you on your faith journey!

I'm the coffee obsessed baker from Miami, FL who got too busy to find time to read scripture everyday. I knew my life was better with Jesus and I knew I wasn't the only one struggling with finding alone time with God every morning, so I put my dreams of opening a bakery aside and set out to produce a five minute daily devotional. What first started as an email chain, has now flourished into a beautiful community and I am so happy you are here!

We are a faith based community in pursuit of daily prayer. All it takes is five minutes - we know you're busy but He loves you still.
