Episode 423

TODAY’S READING:

“Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.

2 “‘Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

Leviticus 26:1-2

Well, I made it a habit to get coffee in the morning from the Starbucks across the street. I have been doing it since the start of the Pandemic. The kids at Starbucks know me by name; they even gave my roommate and me a free Christmas reusable coffee mug during the holidays because we go so often.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say I have made ordering out a false God, but I can tell you that it is something that consumes my wallet and my morning routine without me even realizing it.

False gods have a way of doing that. They creep into our lives, and before we know it, our time and attention are focused on where it shouldn’t be.

I labeled today’s devotional what not to do to help us break down what this verse is saying and what we can do to prevent our hearts from leaving Jesus.

Simply put, we are not to have fake idols. It’s saying not to make an idol, don’t set up an image, do not set up a sacred stone, do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it.

When I dive a little deeper, I can realize how there are sacred stones; the bible isn’t denying that they are sacred. However, our instructions are not to set up0 a place for them for us to worship them. We are to worship our creator. The same goes for statues. We can own sculptures, but it’s asking us not to bow down to it.

In today’s society, I think a lot of us have fake idols in the things we do, places we go, things we follow. We have false idols on Netflix and on Social platforms. We have to be careful to understand when something stops being a tool and becomes all-consuming.

Today’s prayer is simple; Lord shows us the false idols we’ve created and helps us tear them down.

PRAYER

Father God, we love you., Forgive us for making false idols out of what we listen to, watch, wear. Forgive us. Thank you for giving us strength and direction over the next 20 days. We love you so much. It is in your son’s holy name that we pray, AMEN!
