A Disciplined Life

A Disciplined Life

What does living a disciplined life truly look like? In today’s episode, host Gaby Alessi gently invites us to reflect on Proverbs 10:17 as we explore the ways discipline and correction can actually lead us to freedom and fullness in our daily lives. Together, we’ll uncover the wisdom behind receiving correction with an open heart—whether it comes from our friends, loved ones, or leaders—and how it shapes us to thrive, not only for our own sake, but for those around us.

Join our community in prayer and devotion as we ask God to help us accept guidance, cultivate healthy habits, and encourage one another on the path to a life filled with true purpose and joy.

You're listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1353. Today's Devo is called A Disciplined Life. Hey there. We're the Alessi's, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time.

00:00:21.199 --> 00:00:58.210
That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional podcast. Well, welcome back. This is Gabby, your host for the week. First of all, how are we doing, everybody? I'm jumping in because I'm so excited for today's verse, but how are we doing? I hope your week is going great. It is Wednesday, and so it's kind of like the lull of the week, but push through. You can do this. You can overcome this week. You can thrive this week and really experience the goodness of God, even on a Wednesday. I know Wednesdays don't seem

00:00:58.210 --> 00:01:01.689
17.

00:01:02.250 --> 00:01:23.489
We're reading from. I'm reading also from the NIV all week, but it says this. Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. My question for all of us, we're going to jump right into it. My question for all of us is this. How do we receive correction?

00:01:24.609 --> 00:01:53.819
How do we receive correction? The message version of this verse says this. The road to life is a disciplined life. Ignore correction and you are lost for good. You see, I think what I'm seeing from this and what I'm taking away is this. Life is found. And discipline, good life, long lasting life, true life. A life of freedom is found in a disciplined life.

00:01:54.939 --> 00:01:58.299
Whether that's disciplined in, in your daily routine.

00:01:58.700 --> 00:02:53.780
Or maybe it's receiving discipline from a pastor or a leader, maybe receiving correction from your spouse. And maybe they didn't say it a way that you thought they should say it, when really you're just mad that they, they called something out on you. You know, maybe it's receiving something from your parent and receiving discipline from someone older than you or a boss. Whatever it is, what Proverbs is telling us is that there's life in that discipline, that whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life. There is freedom in discipline, which is so opposite. It's so the opposite of what the world wants to teach us. Knowledge says discipline is controlling, right? The world would tell us if, if someone corrects you, stick up for Yourself, because you should not be controlled by anyone. Don't let anyone tell you what to do. When really that's knowledge, but not wisdom.

00:02:54.659 --> 00:03:01.939
That's not something that says, hey, you need people around you to speak into your life because maybe there's a blind spot that you don't see.

00:03:02.659 --> 00:03:29.530
Because let me ask you this. Let's say that person never corrected you. Let's say there was a blind spot and there was some pride in your heart and that leader or boss or spouse never called it out, and you forever lived with pride in your heart. Is that a life that we want to live? Let's say, man, I've got corrected many a times on how I talk to people. I'll be real.

00:03:29.930 --> 00:03:33.289
I talk a lot. I'm a. I think I'm a good communicator.

00:03:33.849 --> 00:03:45.129
So a strength of mine is communication. But sometimes your greatest strength is your greatest weakness. And I don't always communicate the best way. And I got. I still get called out for it.

00:03:45.129 --> 00:04:49.899
My fiance tells me, my brother tells me. People in my life, hey, they're like, you can't say things that way. If I don't receive that correction or that discipline, I will forever be walking around being a bad communicator. And when I communicate poorly, I hurt those around me. If that is what happens if I don't receive it. I don't want to live life like that. I don't want people seeing me as someone that just says things that hurts them. I don't want people avoiding me because of the things that I say about them or walking around hurt because of the things that I said. So I want to receive that discipline and that correction because you know why? It's going to lead me to life. And I love the other side of this verse because it's saying, whoever ignores correction, it leads others astray. Sometimes we think that when we don't receive correction, it's only just us. I'm not going to receive it because it's just me. Anybody else can, but it doesn't affect anyone else, it affects me. But what it's saying is, not only do you go down, but you bring other people down. Not only are you led astray, but you lead others astray. And that's why receiving discipline and correction is so important.

00:04:50.730 --> 00:05:42.250
And I'm going to talk about this a little bit tomorrow, but this is the importance of community and a good church and a good friend group. Because we all need people in our lives that can encourage us one day, but also can correct us the next. We can't just have friends that are always cheering us on. Cheer me on when I, when I do good, cheer me on when, when I succeed, but call me out when I don't. We need people in our lives that call us out when we fall short, when we make maybe a dumb decision, when we don't act in wisdom. We need the friends around us because we can't lead other people astray. We can't be led astray. And there's a life that God is calling us to and sometimes it takes us changing our habits, developing a good routine, receiving correction with a good heart and without offense, building into our heart.

00:05:43.209 --> 00:06:00.810
That's what it takes to live that life. So my prayer for all of us today is that we would open our hearts to discipline and receive correction that's there for us. Lord, we open up our hearts today even if it's difficult, even if it's hard to get past what people say to us, how they say it.

00:06:00.810 --> 00:06:46.199
Lord, I pray that we would push past how someone is correcting us and just receive the correction. Lord, what are they trying to say and how can we be better so that way we can continue in this life but also lead others towards life and lead others towards wisdom. So I thank you for it. In Jesus name, amen. So there you have it. Your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take take on your day.
