You're listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1183. Today's Devo is called Instructions for Christian Living. Hey there. We're the Alessi's, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Good morning everybody and happy Wednesday. My name is Lauren Alessi. I will be your host for this week. And we are talking about newness.
00:00:40.729 --> 00:01:07.030
Whether that's newness of yourself, a new season, you're stepping into the new year, whatever this sort of translates to you. That is what we are talking about. We've been talking about the new plans that God has for you. We've been talking about the ministry of reconciliation and making sure we're walking in the right way so that God can do new things in us. But we've been talking about a lot of newness that God is going to do in us and through us.
00:01:07.069 --> 00:01:48.400
And I'm excited to see where this week ends up. So today we are going to be reading out of the book of Ephesians, and That is Ephesians 4, 20, 24. And I named this episode Instructions for Christian Living. Because if you go reading in the Bible and you look up Ephesians 4, 2024, it literally says right at the top, instructions for Christian Living. So I thought, you know what? Why try to come up with a catchy title? That's what's in the Bible. That's what's going to be the episode four or the title of this episode. So verse 20. Let's start. That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ. You were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.
00:01:48.549 --> 00:05:29.490
You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires, to be made new in the attitude of your minds and to put on the new self created to be like God in his true righteousness and holiness. I love this verse so much because it's basically just talking about we have our old selves and the way that we are truly taught in God's truth. And the biblical truth is to put off our old selves and to put on our new selves, the new selves meaning Christlike ways when we are saved through salvation and and God is teaching us and convicting us to be holier, to walk in his ways, that is the new selves that we put on to be made new in the attitudes of our minds, to walk with God in true righteousness and holiness. And it's very funny because sometimes if you are a newer Christian or you're around people who that have not been saved forever, they sometimes make comments like, oh, that my old self is coming back. Or I, I could have easily, you know, gone off on that person and like my old Christian self could have come out. And you know, people say that jokingly and we understand their heart, but the truth is every morning we need to wake up and be reminded that whether you're new to Christianity, whether you've grown up in it, whether it's your first day being a Christian, we are to put off our old selves and put on the new self that we are found in Christ every single day. That's literally what the cross is for, for us to walk in true righteousness and holiness and to be renewed by our minds. And it's very funny because when I read verses like this, me being in therapy, me having an interest in some sort of psychology, this sounds like a format that some self help book would teach you to wake up and to put away your old self. And the new Lauren, just meditate on the new Lauren, who is the new Lauren, picture the new Lauren and just meditate on that person day in every single morning. And it's just very funny to me because that's essentially where a lot of psychological theories are taking things now. And I know I'm taking this down a different road, but think about it, that's essentially what the Bible is teaching us to meditate on, who God is making us to be the true self that he taught us to be in the likeness of him, in our true righteousness that God has called us to be, in our true holiness that he has called us to be. And this is not from a self help book, this is not from a positive psychology book. No, this is from the Bible. This is from the word of God. So I hope this morning that as you're going to work, if you're struggling adjusting to this new year, if you're struggling with what happened in the old year, I hope that you put off that old self and I hope that you truly walk in the likeness of the new self and the creation that God has created you to be. So let's pray. Dear God, we thank you so much for your word, God and how it sharpens us, Lord, and how it makes us better. God, we thank you for what you did at the cross, Lord, because we are able to put away our old selves, God, and put on the new creation you've called us to be and created us to be, Lord. So give us the courage and the strength to do that today and every day from here on out. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. So there you have it. Your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day. If you found value in this devotional, share it with a friend. Leave a comment or review for us on the app you're using right now. Until tomorrow. We pray that your latte is strong, but your love for Jesus is stronger.
