Jesus Revealed

Have you ever wondered how you would respond if Jesus showed up in the middle of your everyday routine? In today’s episode, we dive into the beautiful story of Jesus revealing himself to the disciples after his resurrection, as told in John 21. Together, we’ll discover what it looks like to encounter Jesus in the ordinary moments of life—just as the disciples did while fishing—and reflect on the humanity of their reactions, their moments of doubt, and the power of recognizing Christ in our midst. We’ll also learn from Peter’s zeal, seeing how we, too, can boldly run toward Jesus, no matter our past failures or lingering shame.
Join us in this uplifting devotional as we come together in prayer, asking God for the passionate devotion to seek Him above all else and to recognize His presence in our daily lives.

You are listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1249. Today's episode is called Jesus Revealed. Hey there. We're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Happy Thursday, everyone. My name is Lauren Alessi. I have been your host for this week. And we are talking about, you know, the, the crucifixion, the resurrection.
00:00:40.271 --> 00:01:20.864
We're talking about Holy Week. And today and tomorrow we're going to be talking about, you know, Jesus revealing himself to the disciples. And, you know, I, I kind of want to talk about stories that we don't talk about a lot. We read about a lot, but we don't talk about a lot during Holy Week because we all, hopefully we all go to church often or we will all go to church on Easter and we will hear of the story of, you know, on Good Friday, the crucifixion on Sunday, the resurrection. But I love hearing about the humanity and the disciples during this time. And I love sort of talking about that because the truth is, that's us, right? So.
00:01:21.031 --> 00:01:32.079
And I think just seeing Jesus in the midst of that all after he was resurrected, it really just glorifies God way above what we can imagine today.
00:01:32.120 --> 00:01:47.250
I'm reading out of the Book of John, chapter 21, verses 1 through 14. And so Jesus has revealed himself to Mary Magdalene. And now he is revealing himself to the seven disciples. So not all the disciples, but seven of the disciples.
00:01:47.829 --> 00:01:57.609
And it says this. Let's start reading after this. Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. And he revealed himself in this.
00:01:57.909 --> 00:02:09.069
Simon Peter, Thomas called the twin Nathanael of Cana in Galilee. The sons of Zebedee and the other two disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, I am going fishing.
00:02:09.229 --> 00:02:20.445
They said to them, we will go with you. They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. So pause. These disciples just decide, hey, I want to go fishing. Okay, well, let's go fishing.
00:02:20.478 --> 00:02:24.169
They go out fishing that night and they catch nothing. Let's continue.
00:02:24.789 --> 00:03:09.243
Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore. Yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, children, do you have any fish? They answered him, no. He said to them, cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find so. So they cast it. And now they were not able to haul it in because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved, therefore said to Peter, it is the Lord. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came into the boat dragging the the net full of fish. For they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.
00:03:09.412 --> 00:03:27.931
When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place with fish laid out on it and bread. Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish that you have just caught. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore full of large fish, 153 of them. And although they were so many, the net was not torn.
00:03:28.075 --> 00:03:38.933
Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast now. None of the disciples dared ask him, who are you? They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them.
00:03:39.021 --> 00:03:45.689
And so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
00:03:46.349 --> 00:03:49.653
I really love this story for a couple reasons.
00:03:49.701 --> 00:05:18.220
One, you just have these disciples, these guys out fishing. Jesus is on the shore. They don't know it's Jesus. And he's like, well, you'll. You haven't caught anything. Cast it on the other side. And isn't that kind of representative of, like, the first time these guys met Jesus? And it's John, he tells Peter and the disciples, he's like, that's the thing Jesus said the first time we met. Oh, my gosh, guys, that's Jesus. So I kind of love that, because you see this parallel in the story of how Jesus has totally changed. Yes, but Jesus has. He really hasn't changed. But then what I also love about this story is just this zeal in Peter that he recognizes as Jesus. And he's like, forget the fish. And he jumps out of the boat and just runs towards Jesus. And this is a disciple who had denied Jesus three times a couple days ago, was feeling the shame of all that, but then somehow was able to throw it off. He didn't get embarrassed in the moment, and he just wanted to be with his friend Jesus. And I just find that so beautiful. And once they sat around the fire, Jesus had apparently laid out breakfast for them, which, yes, they ate fish for breakfast. At the time, none of them decided to go, okay, hold on. Who are you? Apparently, Jesus. You know, he did look different because now he came back all God, not all human, but none of them dared ask, who are you? They, they just knew. This is the Lord.
00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:44.319
This is, this is him, this is the Savior. And I think that's the Holy Spirit that was put on the inside of them, which we see later in Acts, whatever. But I just think that it's so beautiful to see again the humanity of the disciples, but just the glorification in Jesus at that moment. It's just so cool to see in such a simple story about fishing and Jesus. And I love it. I love it.
00:05:45.079 --> 00:05:55.855
So may we see ourselves in the disciples and may we glorify God with how we see Jesus. Let's pray. Dear Lord, I'm going to pray for something specific today. Lord.
00:05:56.048 --> 00:06:35.389
Lord, give us the zeal Peter had in his story. Give us the zeal and the just very zero to little amount of shame that Peter had in this moment. God, that when we see you, when we recognize you, Lord, we say, forget our job, forget our fishing, we're going to run to you, God. And even if that means jumping out of the boat, swimming into water, God, swimming to the shore, Lord, give us that zeal on the inside of us. That when we recognize you, when we see you, God, we just want to be with you. Despite what we've done, despite what we've been through, we just want to be with you, God. Not just me, Lord, everyone listening. Lord, give us that seal. Jesus name we pray.
00:06:35.529 --> 00:06:57.750
