Tend My Sheep

Tend My Sheep

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to care for those around us, just as Jesus asked us to do? In today’s episode, guest host Lauren Alessi invites us into a heartfelt reflection inspired by Holy Week. We’ll walk through the moving story of Jesus asking Peter, “Do you love me?”—and discover together what it means for all of us to “tend His sheep” in our daily lives. As a community, we’ll explore how genuine love for Jesus is shown not just in words, but in action as we serve, support, and uplift those in need.

Join us for this special Good Friday devotional, and let’s unite in prayer and devotion as we ask God to help us become instruments of His love, compassion, and care—living out His call to follow Him and care for His people.

You are listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1250. Today's Devo is called Tend My Sheep. Hey there. We're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Happy Friday, everybody.

00:00:32.664 --> 00:01:54.786
Happy Good Friday. Actually, technically, I hope you're all gonna go to church today and celebrate it and take communion. Remember this, what Jesus did on the cross 2,000 years ago, because it's an important holiday. It's an important day to remember. It's not so much a holiday, it's an important day to remember. My name is Lauren Alessi. I have been your host for this week. I am still your host for this week, and it has been a great week so far. We're talking about Holy Week, Easter Week, Jesus, his death, his resurrection, his life. Before we jump in to today's episode, which we are technically jumping ahead because we did cover the crucifixion. But before we jump into today's episode, again, just a reminder that on May 1, 7pm in South Miami, Coconut Grove, we are having a pop up meeting. I think I described that right. So we're just having a pop up at Chug's Diner. So we would love if you came. If you're in the South Florida community and you just want to come meet us and hang out, we would absolutely love that and we would just love to have you. We'd love to meet you. Yeah, just pop up. That's apparently what you do to pop up. You just pop up. So be there. Okay, let's get into the word. I will be completely honest, when I was reading this verse, I started crying. So I apologize if I start crying again.

00:01:54.938 --> 00:02:49.903
I hope that doesn't make you uncomfortable. Sometimes I get uncomfortable when people cry. Today we're reading out of verses 15 through 19, and it says this. So this is after the story we read yesterday. So Peter sees Jesus, the disciples have breakfast with him. They're eating fish around a campfire and they're like, yeah, this is Jesus. He just revealed himself to us. Peter gets excited, he jumps out of the boat. They're eating breakfast. And now verse 15, it says this. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, feed my lambs. He said to him a second time, simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, simon, son of John, do you love me?

00:02:50.072 --> 00:03:01.360
Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, do you love me? And he said to him, lord, you know everything. You know that I love you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

00:03:01.520 --> 00:03:34.924
Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. This he said to show by what kind of death he was, to glorify God. And after saying this, he said to him, follow me. So that's all of today's reading, but I just kind of want to cover a few things. Peter is sitting with the disciples, and Jesus. And Jesus just keeps asking him, peter, do you love me?

00:03:35.092 --> 00:03:37.900
And this is a man who just jumped out of the boat to see Jesus.

00:03:37.979 --> 00:03:44.919
Yes, he betrayed him. But Peter was, you know, one of the first followers and has been following Jesus for years.

00:03:46.419 --> 00:04:01.126
And Jesus just keeps asking him, do you love me? And Peter's like, you know I love you. And Jesus's answer every time is, feed my lambs. And. And then he asks again, do you love me? Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Okay, tend my sheep. Okay.

00:04:01.157 --> 00:04:04.849
Do you love me? Are you sure you love me? He's like, you know everything.

00:04:05.229 --> 00:05:28.759
You know that I love you. Feed my sheep and follow me. Now, this is not only a message to Peter, this is a message to us. When Jesus says, feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep. He's asking us to take care of the people around us. He's asking us that when we see someone in need of help, he's asking us to take care of those in need of help. If you're in ministry, that means to take care of the sheep, to take care of the lost, to take care of those that can't take care of themselves. When you see someone in need of Jesus Christ, that means revealing Jesus to them. When you see someone who really needs help, you're offering help to them as a believer, as a Christian. And then Jesus ends this by saying, truly, truly. I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go. This he said by what kind of death he was to glorify God. So Jesus is telling him, you're going to do a great work for my work, you're going to glorify me. And then Jesus ends this by saying, follow me. And I think that is something that we, we need to be reminded of. If we love Jesus, we need to follow him. If we love Jesus, we need to feed his lambs, we need to tend his sheep.

00:05:28.920 --> 00:05:54.139
We cannot love Jesus and forget the people who are in need around us. So let that not only be a call to Peter, let that be a call to us. And yes, we could say, lord, you know everything. You know that we love you. But if we're not following up with action and taking care of the people around us and doing a good work and glorifying God, we're not following him and we're not taking care of his sheep.

00:05:55.439 --> 00:06:51.336
Let us be reminded of that this Holy Week, that what Jesus wants from us, what God wants from us is to glorify him by tending his sheep, by feeding his lambs, by feeding his sheep, by following Him. Let us be reminded of that this Holy Week. Let's pray. Dear Lord, we thank you for, we thank you for this week, Lord. We thank you that it's a week dedicated to remembrance starting from Palm Sunday to Good Friday to Easter Sunday. God, we thank you that it's a week of remembrance to you, God, what you did, Lord, with your son, what Jesus did, the death he faced, God, the pain he faced, but also the resurrection, Lord, that truthfully, as Christians, we all get to pay witness to God and even the disciples that they got to witness in person, God. But we get to just experience, Lord, as believers and followers, God, may we truly remember that. May we truly not take it for granted, Lord.

00:06:51.528 --> 00:07:17.201
And may we all live lives that glorify that sacrifice, that glorify that resurrection, Lord, in Jesus name we pray. Amen. So there you have it, your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day. If you found value in this devotional, share it with a friend.
