You are listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1247. Today's episode is called the Crucifixion. Hey there. We're the Alessi's, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time.
00:00:21.519 --> 00:00:50.109
That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Happy Tuesday, everybody. My name is Lauren Alessi and I will be your host for this week, the holy week, the Easter week. We're talking about Jesus's death, Jesus's resurrection, and it's going to be an awesome week. We are going to be reading a lot of word, because why not? This is like the foundation of our faith and everything we believe.
00:00:51.530 --> 00:02:04.305
So let's just jump into the word. I'm going to be reading out of Matthew, chapter 27, verses 32 through 54. And just a reminder, when we talk about, you know, the plot to kill Jesus, when we talk about the crucifixion, when we talk about the resurrection, every part of the story, it's a good practice for us not to read it. Like, oh, man, I could so relate to this story. Or I could take this and apply it to my life because this story is so much bigger than us. The story is really just, let's practice reading it and just glorifying God and saying, thank you, God. Not every story in the Bible do we have to apply to our life. And I'm saying this more as a challenge to myself too, but not every story has to be a something we take and apply to our life. It could just simply be, lord, we glorify you. Look, look at your hand in all of this. Look at how good you are, God. We don't always understand it, Lord, but your hand was in it always. I think that this story, the crucifixion, the resurrection, is the ultimate story where we should be putting that to practice. Okay, so let's start reading verses 32. And it says this. This is already, by the way, in the midst of the crucifixion process that started.
00:02:04.378 --> 00:03:14.569
And now Jesus is already starting to walk down the road with his cross. And it says this. As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, so Simon by name, they compelled this man to carry his cross. And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means place of a skull, they offered him wine to Drink mixed with gall. But when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, this is Jesus, the King of the Jews. And then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads, saying, you who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. So also the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him, saying, he saved others, he cannot save himself. Pause right there. It's just interesting to think of very religious people back in the day, so called religious people who consider themselves very wise and religious, mocking Jesus Christ. It's really interesting to sort of picture that.
00:03:15.430 --> 00:03:19.038
Let's continue. They said, he saved others. He cannot save himself.
00:03:19.133 --> 00:03:26.210
He is the king of Israel. Let him come down now from the cross and we will believe in him. He trusts in God.
00:03:26.629 --> 00:03:30.449
Let God deliver him now if he desires him. Ouch.
00:03:30.750 --> 00:03:45.110
For he said, I am the Son of God. And the robbers who were crucified with him also reveled him in the same way. Verses 45. The death of Jesus. From the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
00:03:45.229 --> 00:04:32.779
And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, eli, Eli le mah sabachthanai. That is my God, My God, why have you forsaken me? And some of the bystanders hearing it, said, this man is calling Elijah. And one of them at once ran, took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. But others said, wait, let us see whether Elijah will come and save him. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised and coming out of the tombs after his resurrections, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
00:04:33.319 --> 00:04:49.100
Pause. I don't think we talk about this enough that when Jesus yielded up his spirit and let out a final breath, bodies of saints who had died had come out of their tombs and went into the holy city and appeared to many.
00:04:49.639 --> 00:04:53.136
Let's. Let's just think about that. Okay, let's continue.
00:04:53.288 --> 00:05:58.300
When the Centurion and those who were with him keeping watch over Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place. They were filled with awe and said, truly, this was the Son of God. Duh. Yeah, Amen. Yeah, that was. And again, just a reminder, like how this is crazy. We see the story and we're like, this is a lot to put Jesus through. But look at God glorified in this all, and it's tough. I can't even imagine being Mary, his mother, who was there witnessing it. John, who was there, the disciple witnessing it. I can't imagine seeing Jesus Christ go through this. But look at how God was glorified in the end. When you have an earthquake, you have the temple torn in two. You have people who had died walking around and like, literally resurrected and walking around appearing to many. So it's kind of crazy. We don't, we don't talk about the people coming out of the tombs enough. I think that's kind of crazy. But what I love about the story is it's so sad, but it's just the beginning.
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:23.980
And I can't wait to talk about the resurrection, Jesus being revealed in other episodes. But let's, let's just dwell in that for a second. Let's just thank God. Let's end today's episode with a thank you prayer. Lord, thank you so much for what you did on that cross, Lord. For nine hours, God, you were in pain. For nine hours, Lord, you were mocked for us, for our sins. You took on our sins, Lord.
00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:28.295
You yourself had to face physical pain, human pain.
00:06:28.408 --> 00:06:50.048
You went through human trials, God, and you gave it up. And you suffered as we do, God, but you suffered and gave it up for us, God, for our sins. And we can't thank you enough. And to be honest, Lord, it's bigger and greater than we can ever imagine, God. So we just thank you and we just ask that you help us glorify you, Lord, in everything we do. In Jesus name we pray.
00:06:50.144 --> 00:07:01.504
Amen. So there you have it. Your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day.
