The Resurrection

What would you do if you discovered the tomb was empty? In today's episode of My Morning Devotional, with our host Lauren Alessi, we dive into the awe-inspiring story of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as recounted in the book of John, chapter 20. Together, we'll explore the moments of doubt and revelation experienced by Mary Magdalene and the disciples, and uncover the profound truth that sometimes our understanding is expanded beyond our immediate perception.
Join us in this enlightening devotional as we pray for hearts open to seeing God's greater purpose in our lives, just as it was revealed to the disciples long ago.

You're listening to the My Morning Devotional podcast, episode 1248. Today's episode is called the Resurrection. Hey there. We're the Alessies, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time. That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the My Morning Devotional Podcast. Happy Wednesday, everybody. My name is Lauren Alessi. I will be your host for this week. And today we're talking about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. No, for real, this is really exciting. Today we're reading out of the book of John, John, chapter 20, verses 1 through 18. And like we spoke about before, if you join us, we talked about the plot to kill Jesus. We talked about Judas in the first episode.
00:00:54.768 --> 00:01:50.152
We talked about the crucifixion yesterday. Now we're talking about the resurrection. And, you know, because we have to talk about this. And we're always going to be dedicating a week, like the Holy Week, to reading more of the Word, because what are we going to say about the resurrection of Jesus Christ? We're just going to glorify him through reading the actual words of Jesus. It's the best thing we could do for him who did it for us all those years ago. Okay. Another thing is just a reminder when we're reading out of John that he's going to refer to himself a lot as the one or just the only. He's only going to refer to himself as the one whom Jesus loved. So when you hear that, just be like, oh, yeah, John. I find it kind of funny. It's like, man, if I were to write a book that I had to refer to myself as girl who was absolutely perfect, you know, it's kind of funny. I don't know. I think it's funny. Okay, so today we're going to be reading out of chapter 20, verses 1 through 18.
00:01:50.256 --> 00:02:26.274
And it says this. Now, on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, guess who that is, and said to them, they have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. So Peter went with the other disciple and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple Outran Peter and reached the tomb first. Pause. So again, what we see here is that it's John and Peter.
00:02:26.401 --> 00:03:13.719
And we do know that John and Peter had like a little bit of like a tiff, sort of. And John, who's writing the book, wants you to know that John ran a lot faster than Peter. Okay, so both of them were running together. But the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came following him and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there and the face cloth which had been on Jesus head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in and he saw and believed, for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples went back to their homes.
00:03:14.610 --> 00:04:00.949
So pause before we continue. What we see here is that the disciples and Mary, they just really think that someone stole Jesus. They. They're not applying the scripture that they grew up with in the Torah about how the Savior was going to come and he was going to rise from the dead. That's not clicking for them. So let's continue. Verse 11. But Mary stood weeping outside of the tomb because she thinks Jesus's body got stolen. And as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb and she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had laid. One at the head and one at the feet. They said to her, woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. I would have been the same way. I would be like you stole his body.
00:04:01.569 --> 00:04:05.247
Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing.
00:04:05.394 --> 00:04:12.759
But she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?
00:04:13.259 --> 00:04:49.959
Supposing him to be the gardener. She said to him, sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, mary. She turned to him and said in Aramaic, rabboni, which means teacher. Jesus said to her, do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father, but go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord and that he has said these things to her.
00:04:51.620 --> 00:05:02.220
What a beautiful story. I find it fascinating that Mary didn't recognize him until he said her name, Mary. And then boom, she just recognized him.
00:05:02.600 --> 00:06:01.129
I think that's something that we can apply. Maybe that's something we can apply to our lives, that Jesus knows us. And maybe it's hard to recognize him in everyday lives, but when he says our names, Jesus knows us. And then it's like, oh, I can see Jesus, because he knows your name and he knows you. And just like Mary, he said, come on, Mary, like I know you. And that's when she recognized him. But man, just, just imagine being the disciples, you think, you think his body got stolen. And little do they know, all of it was for so much of a bigger purpose and let that expand our thinking today. Sometimes we just think, oh my gosh, all of this is like their thinking was so small, they think a body got stolen. They had no idea. This is fulfilling the prophecy. This is bigger than you're thinking. This is bigger than you can imagine. All of this is on purpose because Jesus had to be resurrected from the dead. So let that expand our thinking today too. Let's pray.
00:06:01.290 --> 00:06:08.266
Dear Lord, thank you for what you did 2000 years ago on the cross, Lord. But thank you God, that you resurrected three days later.
00:06:08.338 --> 00:06:26.819
God and Lord, help us not get stuck into small thinking, Lord, but help us see your hand in it all, Lord, that you are doing things so much bigger than we can imagine, Lord. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. So there you have it. Your 5 minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today.
