Why Do We Obey?

Why Do We Obey?

What lesson does the story of Jesus asking Peter three times if he loves Him teach about obedience?

Happy Monday! Gaby Alessi is our host for this week! Today, we’re starting a series of devotionals focused on obedience to Christ, beginning with “Why Do We Obey?” We’ll be diving into the powerful story from John 21:15-17, where Jesus speaks with Peter about the true meaning of following Him. It’s not about rules or checklists—it’s all about love.

You're listening to the my morning Devotional podcast, episode 1111. Today's Devo is called why do we obey? Hey there. We're the Alessis, a ministry family working together in our church in Miami, Florida. And if you're like us, when days get busy and to do lists get longer, it can be hard to find devotional time.

00:00:22.525 --> 00:00:41.000
That's why we've partnered with our friend Allison to produce a five minute daily dose of heaven. This is the my morning Devotional podcast. Well, happy Monday, everybody. It's the month of October, and I just cannot believe that we already are here. How did we make it to October already?

00:00:41.299 --> 00:01:58.688
This is Gabby sharing with you guys for the week, and I've been really looking forward to getting on here again and sharing just the next couple of devotionals for this entire week. I felt led because so many of my conversations leading up to this have been about obedience. And I've been talking to a lot of people about my own seasons of obedience. I feel like even right now I'm in a season where God's calling me to be obedient. I've spoken to a lot of my friends that are feeling the same way that the Lord has them in a season of obedience. And so I felt like, you know what? This is something that I'd like to share. I'd like to even open up about the season that I'm currently in with all of you guys. So the entire week of devotionals is going to be about that beautiful word we all love, obedience. You know, it's funny I said it. We have seasons of obedience. I actually don't think that's true. I think our life is obedience to Christ. And so today's Devo I want to read. It's kind of like a story, but it's just mainly the main reason of why we obey Christ. And this is in John 20, 115 through 17. And this is when Jesus was resurrected. And he is. It actually starts like this. It says when they had finished eating.

00:01:58.823 --> 00:02:09.584
This is Jesus sitting down with the disciples, eating. Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? Yes, Lord. Peter said, you know that I love you.

00:02:09.711 --> 00:02:20.605
Jesus responds, feed my lambs. Again. Jesus said, simon, son of John, do you love me? He answered, yes, lord, you know that I love you. Jesus said, take care of my sheep.

00:02:20.758 --> 00:04:38.358
The third time he said to him, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was hurt because Jesus had asked him the third time, do you love me? He said, lord, you know all things you know that I love you. And Jesus said, feed my sheep. I so love this story because, yes, there's so many things that you can look at. There's so many, you know, theological perspectives or little takeaways that you can find in this story of why would Jesus ask three times? But, you know, I think there's something here. Jesus says, if you love me, then you're going to do what I ask you to do. If you love me, feed my sheep, take care of my people. And, you know, when it comes to our obedience, when it comes to Jesus commanding something of us or asking something of us, we should do it simply because we love him. We shouldn't do it because there's something in it for us. We shouldn't do it because it's a set of rules. We shouldn't do it because we feel forced or bound. No, we should do it because we love the Lord. You know, Jesus is sitting here, he's asking Peter, do you love me? And every time Peter would respond, Jesus would tell him. He'd give him a command. He would say, go and take care of my people. And yes, this is, this is a big story about serving God's people, but that is something that Peter had to be obedient to. Peter had to leave this conversation and say, God, I'm going to be obedient unto you by feeding your sheep, by feeding your lambs. But it comes out of our love. It came out of Peter's love for Jesus. And so this just has been, has really been marinating even in my spirit because, you know, I can kind of be a more type, a more rule oriented person. I love rules. I think I thrive with rules. Personally, I know not everybody's like that. Rules don't bind me. They actually kind of give me freedom. But what I'm finding is that it's almost like I love the rule rather than the ruler, or I love the command rather than the person that's giving the commands. And so I find this, if I do these things, it's because of the principle. It's because I'm doing it instead of I am doing these things because I love him and I love he who calls me.

00:04:38.533 --> 00:04:53.625
And so when I mentioned the ruler, he who commands, I'm talking about goddess. You know, I'm going to do what God asks me to do simply because I love him. And I found this point. It says, living to obey rules won't get you far.

00:04:53.817 --> 00:05:12.529
Living to love the Lord our God with all your heart, with all your soul and all your mind. And loving obedience will bring you freedom like you have never experienced. So it's not about the rules. It's not about the principles. You know, it's not about the. The checklist of am I a good christian? Did I read my word today?

00:05:12.649 --> 00:05:38.230
Am I feeding his sheep? Am I being kind? Or am I staying? Am I staying true in this waiting season? It's not about those things. It's about loving the Lord and doing what he asks because we love him. And so I hope that blesses you today, and I hope that can be a really great, just a perspective shift, a mindset shift when it comes to obedience. That if you are finding yourself in a place where God's asking you to stay still, maybe.

00:05:38.389 --> 00:05:49.512
Maybe God's asking you to change jobs, maybe God's asking you to get committed to a church, or maybe you're in a relationship and God is calling you to come out of that relationship, whatever it may be.

00:05:49.696 --> 00:06:04.680
Let everything we do come out of our love for him. Lord, we thank you today. We thank you that you love us and that you give us a place and you have a relationship with us that we can fully love and adore you.

00:06:04.839 --> 00:06:15.733
God, I pray our love for you continues to grow and that every time you ask of us, every time that you set us up for obedience, Lord, that we would do it because we simply love you.

00:06:15.901 --> 00:06:48.286
And I just pray over the rest of this week as we talk about obedience, that you would just stir up our hearts, that you would open up our hearts and our minds as we just take five minutes of our day to talk about how we can be obedient and serve you. We thank you, Lord, for it. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. So there you have it. Your five minute daily dose of heaven. Thank you so much for tuning in today. We pray these devotionals empower you to take on your day. If you found value in this devotional, share it with a friend, leave a comment or review for us on the app you're using right now.

00:06:48.398 --> 00:06:53.029
Until tomorrow, we pray that your latte is strong, but your love for Jesus is stronger.
